Managing Director Piripi Curtis created Hikoi NZ Ltd over 22 years ago, initially to provide tours including Marae stays in and around Lake Rotoiti and Lake Okataina, Rotorua. After a hiatus to pursue his passion for teaching and provide IT support to local schools, Piripi was lured away from the classroom to join his brother Richard Curtis in the Television industry. The brothers shared an interest in hunting, so with Piripi's well established management skills and Richard's 20+ years of experience as a camera operator, they pitched the first hunting show to air on NewZealand's Indigenous television network, Maori Television. While most would say the rest is history, for these two it was 'lets go hunting!'
'Hunting Aotearoa' became one of the highest rating shows on Maori Television, it reached the number one spot on Australia's Indigenous Network, NITV and is distributed internationally enjoying viewership from around the globe. 15 years on, this bilingual show delivered in both English and Te Reo Māori is in it's 15th season and now broadcasts on TVNZ's Choice TV channel as well as the Māori Television Service.
Unlike production houses based in major cities, Hikoi NZ Ltd has the advantage of being centrally located in Rotorua, New Zealand, considered by some to be the heart of tourism for Aotearoa. This is a prime location to capture all the hunting action in the North Island, with neighbouring towns and cities a mere 1.5 hours or less in every direction, flanked by snow topped mountains, pristine waterways and idyllic sandy beaches.
With business so close to his home and his family, it's enabled Piripi to continue his community work and his passion for Rotorua, he is currently the Chairman of the Manupirua Trust and has served as a board member for multiple marae, hapu and schools over the past 16 years.
